Bob: I think for people who use s two post lift every day they don't even think about it. For me, and I suspect many others, we are pretty careful and probably overthink where to put the lift pads. So... I try to put the front ones as close to the front wheels as possible, and extent the back ones as far back on the frame as they will reach. Then I lift it off the ground maybe a few inches, and push/pull hard on the front and back just to make sure it is not tippy. Now this changes of course if you use a lift and drop a transmission or axle.... Jacks are your friend then. Here is the link to the Bendpak site that discusses lift points. All the cars I've owned in the last 20 years have clearly marked locations where to put the lift pads. I'd also suggest not using flat pads, but the metal "U" shaped thing that sits on the arm that captures the frame.
