Using multiple power sources, you may want to hook the grounds together so they are all playing on a "level" field.
Other than that, multiple power sources are very common in the hobby robotic field. You run something like a 9V for the brains and some giant LiPo to run the motors. Hooking the grounds together helps not blow things up.
