If you're not getting popping through the carb or exhaust, valve adjustment is probably fine. My guess, you have broken piston compression rings, you have a significant difference in compression from the other cylinders. If you can hand crank the engine, use an engine stethoscope to listen 1/4 down from engine deck for blow-by. My engine ran on all six cylinders, idle fine even with this bad piston, just had low compression.
