The block is no wider than that of a LA 318. The reason that it seems wider is the cylinder heads. The wedge heads are narrower than the poly heads, along with being about 40lbs lighter. That is the reason for the wierd pushrod angle on the LA 318, the heads went up instead of out like the poly. The poly head will bolt on an LA block as well as the lower end parts interchanging. :')
