The pipe idea will work fine if you take the time to file them precisely. Another tip on that is to make it longer and cross drill a hole through the pipe so you can "misuse" a screw driver for a tee-handle.
I made a fancy one out of an old deepwell socket. Ground it using a surface grinder, now I can use a rachet and extensions if necessary. Kevin
