Any weld is a failure point,this from my certifed welder/truck mechanic best friend turned mechanical engineer.Anything that breaks the top plate of the frame is a bad thing.A "C" channel to go over the outside or slide inside the frame will replace said break and spread the load.Look at the late model dodge and chevy pickups,the frames are pieced together and lapped in order to allow for different wheelbases instead of having to make so many different one piece frame rails.
