Anything you do to it now is better than doing nothing, rust never sleeps. Just get some cans of rustoleum primer and get going,someday when you really want to do it up you're going to sand most of it off again anyway. As long as you aren't planning on a laquer paint job which is highly unlikely you shouldn't have any problems.
