Rubber grommet question

This question has to do with a jeep, but since I also have a '67 W300 I figured you wouldn't mind.

1960 CJ5. The DC generator mounts via two shoulder bolts which pass through two rubber grommets. The grommets look something like you would see in the ends of shock absorbers or in the "doggie bone"-type engine mounts used in modern cars. The outside diameter of the two ends of the grommet is about 1-inch,
and he ends are about 1/8-inch thick. The middle part of the grommet is about 5/8-inch diameter and about 1/2-inch long. So, you can see the diameter of the two ends are larger than the diameter of the middle part by at leats 3/8-inch, probably closer to 1/4-inch.

The middle portion of the grommet fits VERY tightly inside a bore in the mounting bracket, with the two large-diameter ends
lying flush against the flat surface on the top and bottom of the bore.

So, the stupid question is, does anyone know any tricks for inserting the grommet inside the bore? The rubber is not very flexible. I've already ripped two trying to force them in. Anybody know any tricks for softening the rubber grommet, or some method of inserting these stupid things? Thanks.
