On is not so bad either, but not as easy. I need to do the same thing on my ‘50 sometime too, even though it was a runner when I bought it. Scary how much sludge can collect in the pan.
Back in the day, I recall using cotton thread to tie the cork pan gasket on through the screw holes to keep it from sliding around.
