When I torn my 218 down I found the oil pick-up had fallen off and was not connected to the oil pump at all. It had good oil pressure and never appeared to have oil starvation, but then I never went up steep hills. I would suggest dropping the pan and checking that. Good time to clean the sludge out while it is off.
