Ground up tires are one of the ingredients in asphalt is what I have been told. If true, then someone is lining their pockets by selling used tires to the asphalt companies.

Paying someone to take my old tires off my hands, and then see them turn around and make more profit off of them as they sell them, is very strong incentive for someone to just go throw them in the nearest ravine.
