I was very reluctant to tear into things because of the bad things I could find. So far, I can see no cracks in either the head or the block. But of course I am not magnafluxing it, only visually inspecting. The run-hot issue happened all of a sudden a couple years ago. The scent of coolant has been there for 15 years or more. It will need a rebuild someday. Just hoping I can fix this in the meantime and get a few more years out of it.
