It looks like it never really needed a plug. The whole passage is only about 1-1/2" long. And as long as one has the correct plate on the waterpump that is specified for the serial number range, no coolant can get into the that passage.

I don't think they necessarily were jerry-rigging anything. Going by the numbers it just appears that the the new block was used on the Power-Wagon for a very few serial numbers before the waterpump, thermostat, and thermostat elbow were replaced with the newer style to take advantage of the internal bypass passage.

From what I see now, I have all the correct parts according to the parts lists and the title. I think I got all worked up for nothing.

Not surprised that some of the cars got updated engines and components before the trucks. Trucks, and specifically Power Wagons, always seemed to have take a back seat.
