Hi All,
Last Wednesday, spring finally got to the frozen northern wastelands enough that I could get the 57 W-100 out. Took a really nice drive, just wandered around for about 50 miles, and it ran like a top. Over the winter replaced the pushrods with custom adjustable ones which seems to have cured the sewing machine ticking that was driving me crazy, rebuilt the transfer case which is now noticeably quieter, added a tach and electronic ignition. All good!
Driving along, I always felt like I was going faster than the speedometer said. Yesterday I downloaded a gps speedometer app on my phone and went for another drive. The speedometer is slow 1 mph per 5, or 20% off. Whe it says I am at 40, I am really going 48. To the best of my knowledge, the speedo gear is original but who knows what has gone on in the last 60 years. The truck has the 4:88 gearing. Could the speedo gear be for another gear ratio? When I was rebuilding the transfer case, I investigated installing the speedo gear from an M37 as it is several inches longer and gets the speedo cable out of the hole they normally are and are a lot easier to install the cable. I checked the tooth count and the W-100 gear had a lot more teeth the\an the M37 gear which would have had 5:83 gears. Speedo runs nice and smooth.
Any ideas out there?
Thanks,
Tim
