I cleaned up my transfer case but took it to the local powder coater to get it refinished, or at least I did with the main body. I did the smaller input and output sections myself. Though while the home stuff isn't bad the commercial stuff is better.

If you blast them yourself you may want to bake them before painting or powder coating, that will help any oil trapped inside seep out.

I used glyptal inside the casing after it was coated, but with powder coating you could technically just have the inside powder coated as well. The glyptal has been a good purchase though, I've used that quart on a lot of casting interiors. It's nasty stuff to apply but tough.
