If you have access to a shop with a hot tank that would be great and I'd do that. I just cleaned one in my blast cabinet and that's pretty easy too if you have a blast cabinet.
When you are done, I suggest painting the inside of the casting with Glyptal paint. As mentioned, the casting is porous, and from the factory they painted the inside.
If you don't like leaks or drips, you might think about replacing the OEM bolts that penetrate the casting with flange bolts, and put a copper crush washer under it. Also, if the shafts are worn speedi sleaves are your friend.
