I smoothed my axle housings and I did sandblast them. You'll find that a lot of the castings are porous as even after blasting the will "seep" more oil out. I reblasted several times and had to wipe down a lot before painting. Use and epxy primer for best results as it is more of a glue type adhesion as opposed to the "bite" of an etching primer. I prefer blasting myself.
