Battery question

Is it possible to install a battery wrong and it work. My 41 wc9 should be pos ground. But its hooked up neg. The gauge is reading discharge but its clearly not. I just got the truck and noticed this. The people i got it from had inherited the truck and had no clue. Any help would be great.
