There is a modern ish street tire known as the Interco Bogger that is pretty much a Chevron tread tire. In order to stop, the tire is oriented in the manner of the photo on the front tires, this is due to weight bis forward during stopping. The chevron tire has maximum forward traction when the TOP of the tire is arrowed in the direction of travel. The tread pattern in the ground shows the direction of orientation of a standard chevron treaded vehicle. I also had heard that some Allies would mount the chevrons backwards on scout cars to confuse anyone trying to follow them as the standard rotation would give away direction of travel as noted above.
