...so the 58 PW I bought off EBay, the fellow I bought it from said it had a weird engine knock. He posted a video of it running but you couldn't hear it through the computer. So I decided not to bother running it...nothing good could become of it & I was going to pull it apart regardless. So first thing I noticed...the crank pulley but was finger tight...like I was worried the crank was going to have damage it was do loose. Nope...no damage.
So I thought...I bet that was the knock.
Oh well...pulling it apart anyway. Next thing I notice...only like 2 quarts of oil in it & it's like tar...hmmm...that's not good.
Pull the head...looks good. Bores look perfect. Pull all the valve train & cam, flip it over & pull the pan, but don't really inspect the pan...I just put it aside & start to unbolt rods...first piston...WTF? No skirt left on the piston? Next piston...same & no rings left! 4 pistons completely destroyed.
Sheesh. I doubt that thing had 5 more minutes of running before a rod came out the side of the block!
It's a good lesson for anyone with an engine that makes noise...shut it off immediately & take it apart.
Noises rarely get better when you rev the engine up :)
I'll post a pic or 2 next time I'm at my shop.
The amazing thing...there doesn't seem to be any block damage. Minimal wear to the crank, I guess from all the metal floating around in there.
I'd say it was a pretty close call.
