Anything you do at the base connection between the cable and the drum will transfer into the wrapping of the cable. A knot, clamp, or even a nut welded on the end of the cable may facilitate starting of wrapping but it will make a smooth wrapping of the cable impossible. Some drums have 2 holes in the side, to allow the cable to slip out the side and then back in, to hold in place, but even that can cause difficulties in a smooth wrap.
