Bear in mind, I don't know much about winching, but can you not stick the end of the cable through that cast loop and then loop the cable back on itself and clamp it to itself? I know this is not strong enough to hold any significant load, and you will still have to rely on the friction of the last few wraps to hold the load, but it seems like clamping the cable to itself would be better than not clamping it.
