I also had one that worked fine for many years - close to 15 years in frequent usage. although it probably only amounted to about 10,000 miles. Then the truck sat for 10 years (still sitting, but at least I'm working on it now). The electric pump probably still works fine, but I bought a new one anyway, because the truck sat for so many years with old fuel in the lines. I figured it's probably best not to chance the old one malfunctioning due to varnish build-up. That's a minor expense anyway, compared to everything else I'm doing to the truck.

As was mentioned elsewhere, I mounted the pump close to the tank and ran it in series through the mechanical fuel pump, using the same fuel lines as the mechanical pump. At first, I only used the electric one when vapor lock set in, but after a few years, when my mechanical pump gave up, I had to run the electric one full-time. The bulk of the miles were on the electric pump - probably 8000+ miles. It's a NAPA pump. I'd have to crawl under the truck to find the part number, as the pump is still attached. The failed mechanical pump was still mounted on the block all this time. I figured there was no reason to remove it, although as someone mentioned, I suppose it's possible to have fuel dump into the crankcase, but fortunately, that never happened to me.
