the split rings on a PW or M37 are a bit different than on lets say a D300. the rings are much taller and grab more tire bead. the way they grab into the rim is different as well. They were designed to be abused offroad. I bet if you looked in an M37 maintenance manual it would tell you how low you can go in sandy conditions.
