We took the ferry from Juneau to Seattle when the kids were young. We did camp out on the deck.
In 2016 we drove our camper to Alaska. We drove the Alaska Highway on the way up and the Cassiar Highway on the way back. It was a long trip but a lot of fun. There are miles and miles of very beautiful wilderness with nothing else. A lot of the older businesses have folded due poor economics and the increased dependability of cars. The roads were good but there is always construction zones as they improve or repair the road.
Seattle to Anchorage is about 2500 miles each way.
