You know I have noticed that quite a few new diesel trucks have finned differential covers. Also I suspect newer aerodynamics try to route air from the undersize of the truck which may reduce cooling.

Another thought is that maybe for better fuel economy they are actually using the coolant to warm up the gear oil. On the heavier duty trucks with no load, which is common, the differential may not warm up in the winter much. Cold oil collects moisture and of course is thicker.
