I understand that Ford uses ATF in the light trucks due to they closed the tolerance and ATF was a quieter option, as well as normal car drivers were buying them and they tried to quiet down the noise of the trany since the younger crowd can hear noise we have lost ability to hear.
One problem it requires it to be checked every 100,000 miles since it has a tendency to vaporize in hot temperatures and the 6th gear becomes dry, since it is the smallest gear and you can loose OD. (It called it out in the Service book that came with my truck but I never did since I never had issues with 90 weight in other trucks with 200-300 thousand miles, I was wrong and payed for a rebuild at about 160,000 miles)
The man that built mine told me to replace my ATF with Rotella T.
When I sold my 1980 Ranger it had over 285,000 miles on it and still getting 22 MPG, 6 years old with only providing regular maintenance on engine.
If I were to use Rotella T from the get go I don't think I would have had any issues.
My 2001 with the 7.3 and 6 speed gets checked, regularly and it has 300,000+ with no issues, but has a cooler on it so I have not changed it to Rotella T.
