I tend to agree with what Wayne is saying below, and it also sounds like the leading (inner) end of the bushing either got dinged or crushed during installation. Bill said the shaft fit before installation, but won't slide all the way in afterward. So the inner end of the bushing has gotten smaller somehow. If it was cocked a bit when Bill started working it in, that would pinch the inner end and cause the problems he's seeing. I still suggest he gently open the inner end with a half round file.
