I have never had any formal Engineering training, so the hand calculations are way above my head. But, I supervised individuals in the design center where I worked whose sole job was to run FEA. And I used the cheap version embedded within Solid Works a few times. Applying the loads and watching the cold spots turn hot, and then changing the material size, position, or composition and watching the reds turn back to green again, a guy kind of developed a "feel" for it after a while.

It is kind of amazing just how elastic and forgiving steel can actually be. But take an axle shaft that has developed a memory over a few decades and suddenly reverse the load on it in just the wrong way and hear her snap in two.
