Bill: If you need the exact dimensions I can track them down. I did my axle last year, and I think what many people myself included) ran into was aftermarket bushings with the OD too small, so they did not seat securely in the axle housing. They should go in pretty snug. Not with a sledgehammer, but certainly a hammer.
I seriously doubt you would change the inside diameter of that bushing by hammering it in. Now you may have dimpled the edge of it by whacking it in if you hit it with metal and not wood. I think the best way is with a round piece of wood and hit that with your hammer.
