Bronze inner axle bushing question

Has anyone had problems installing the bronze inner axle bushing? I had purchased several bushings from a well known vendor many years ago and before driving the bushing into the axle housing I slid it down over the axle with no problems to check fit. When installing it into the housing I noticed it drove in with an extremely thight fit requiring several hard blows. Now the axle will not slide all the way through to the riding surface. Could the bushing's inside diameter have been squeezed tighter to prevent the axle sliding in? I seem to remember sometime back several comments about problems with new replacement bushings. What is the correct outside diameter of a good axle bushing?
