So I'm thinking the roughness is the engine.

Did some experimenting today in my ongoing quest to smooth out the driveline in my carryall.

Got the speedo working for a bit. I compared the speedo to the GPS phone thing. Possibly not GPS,. Who knows what make them phones go? The truck seems to like around 41-43 mph via the iPone. The speedo puts that at about 44-45. When I push the truck up to 44-45 on the iPhone, the speedo is up around 50. Is the speedo accurate or reading high? Not sure. But the truck seems way happier running those speeds than what the iPone is telling me.

Then I ran the machine down hill. The speed built up, I could feel the buzzing vibration in the steering wheel. Then I let off the gas and pushed in the clutch.

Silky smooth. Amazingly smooth. So the driveline seems pretty happy. I'm thinking the engine has something gong on that's making it run rough at high RPM, lightly loaded. But I'm stuck for how to diagnose this. I have no ignition scope. I miss those. No way to read the fuel mixture. Actually, I could do a plug reading. But I've never been all that good at reading them. Like reading tea leaves.. Is it out of balance? Wrong harmonic balancer? Do these even have harmonic balancers?

I have a new set of cap, rotor & wires coming in from Midwest next week so we'll see if those help.

I'm kinda' stuck here. Temporarily out of ideas.
