If your wanting a truck to drive that will keep up with traffic, negotiate hills well, get you someplace quick, and drive very often, then upgrade the power plant and drivetrain. Doing so is time and money, and money will determine how far you can go with upgrading.

If you want a truck to remain fairly stock and go a little faster for occasional trips around town and some distance driving that will keep up fairly well with traffic, upgrade the transmission.

An example is to go to the link below, scroll down to the transmission section and see a Clark O/D transmission mated to a 230 bell housing. This gives a 30% O/D, synchronized gears and bullet proof trans. So pick yourself up a trans of your choice, a when you rebuild the engine have the machinist mate it to the bell housing. Go with a 23 splined input shaft.
