My Dad was in the Merchant Marines. A few years ago, just before he died, we went to a one day trip on a restored MM ship on the Chesapeake Bay. It turned out to be our last father/son thing together - just us. The video we took is one of my prized posessions today.
My advice is to take him somewhere to cross something off his bucket list. Only you know what he would really enjoy, so just surprise him and do it with him. Hanging out in the shop is OK, but do something much better with him while you still can.
