For mountaineering I used thin, tight fitting polypropylene gloves inside thick insulated gloves or mittens. The inner gloves were used when delicate work needed doing and frostbite was a possibility (sometimes in less than a couple of minutes).
I do use the Mechanix type gloves but find that I cannot do as fine work.
Another possibility is 'Musher's Wax' for dog's pads. Never tried it on me but works well for the beagle.
