The crack seem to wear that way.
Also the holes are supposed to be that big on the ends at allows the manifold to float. That is why some of the rest of the manifold also is just held down by washers to allow floating under Heat & Cooling. All inline engines have trouble not cracking manifold without proper design. This design seems to be a good one as rarely do they ever seem cracked
