Nah. Vaccuum systems fill with gas naturally.

When the diaphragm relaxes, it only sucks air in from the intake- it is a fuel/air mix. So the gas in the diaphragm is not abnormal.

First, get over your fear of removing a distributor. Rmove the cap, bump the engine over until the rotor points straight ahead. Remove dist, point vac fitting down, and pump the breaker plate back and forth to squish the gas out. Replace dist, with rotor pointing forward, and retime with a light. While it's out, change the points and condenser as needed.

But Kaegi is right diaphrams do go bad, your's may be too. But if it leaked, the engine would have sucked air in and sucked the fule into the engine for burning. So doubtful.

Street vehicles will run better with vaccum advances. Acelerate smoother, get a bit more energy from each gallon.
