Are the caps on the axles chromed? say 4x4? If so they are like Dad's probably. They have springs in them with Dogs. When you shift the front axle in via the transfer case lever on the floor they grab and lock the front axle in. To get then to release, you normally had to back up some ONCE the transfer case lever was put back to 2WD. The grease gets old and sticky so you sometimes have to take them apart, clean up and regrease to get them to work again. It easy to do. To check what you exactly have, take the cover off and look inside. If you see springs and catch dogs, they are autolock hubs. Most fulltimes just have a pressed in cap as it is a solid piece of steal in there.
