When we were doing the boat building thing, we tried using Epifanes. Mostly as an experiment. The really neat thing about Epifanes was that it seemed to shrink as it dried. This had the wonderful effect of taking amateur brush strokes and smoothing them out overnight. Even I, who was always the worst in the lot, could turn out nearly professional quality using the stuff. We ended up only having that in the shop.
How does it hold up over time in the sun? I don't know. I don't think any varnish holds up all that well myself. Its pretty and demands a lot of attention. Sound familiar?
