Considering the history of politics in Washington, something as big as removing cars from our streets would take decades to go through congress.
Legislation to remove American cars from American roads could easily become political leverage during election time, and leverage issues don’t easily go away in this country. They’re always debated and never acted upon, which is generally ok with me. I don’t like losing my freedoms during sessions of congress.
I don’t doubt that technology is already in place and I don’t doubt that they could produce traffic fatality numbers and energy conservation numbers to support the move, but it won’t happen any time soon. Certainly not in the timeframe that Lutz points to.
