In addition to breathers, the following must be in good shape:
Knuckle felt seals must be lubed with oil and in good shape;
All bearings must be adjusted where there are seals. If there is play, oil leaks out, water runs in.
"Prudent Man Rule" - stay out of water unless unavoidable.
