...or Outlook Express, turn off your Preview Pane. Apparently you don't have to open the attachment, just the e-mail itself. The preview pane opens the mail message as soon as it's highlighted and then it's too late to delete it. This is how it (the virus) got me.
There may be similar features in other e-mail programs. I'm only familiar with Outlook.
