NP 540/1/2 statistics - looking for data

I know that this question has been answered before, but does anyone know of the measurements on the NP540 (overdrive) that will fit into a power wagon? What is the 'stickout' measurement of the SM420 vs the NP540-O?
Also, I remember reading a while back that there was a way to tell if it was an OD or not by the position of the shift lever in fifth gear, or perhaps it was the position of the shift lever in reverse.
