I have a 63 WM300 with a 251, that I found to have a break in the head gasket near the narrow part between the 5th and 6th cylinders. The former owner said he had replaced the head gasket before I bought the truck. Is this a common problem with these engines? If so how can it be prevented?
My plan is to mill the head to remove any warpage and to use wooden dowels of the same diameter as the head bolts to make sure the head is lowered onto the block without any sideslip. The gasket appears to have been damaged during installation near the break.
I also need to know the proper torque and tightening sequence for the head bolts
Thanks
Jerry
