Ha! In 46 all they had was straight enamel. If you spray them with epoxy...any 2 part epoxy, that's infinitely tougher paint than anything available in 1946. I mean the only two choices were straight enamel or laquer & neither is even 1/4 as tough as a good poly eurethane or epoxy Jerry. That said, every truck I've done I've used Endura. Although it's mega tough & ive never seen it worn through...it gets scuffs on it from boots on the running boards.
See for me, you paint it & it wears just like it used to get worn in 1946. I could dip them in liquid rubber...maybe have them vulcanized with rubber...it would look just as original as rhino lining on a fender or running board :)
