Dave is right though in that the only way to know if you are actually running lean is to connect up an O2 sensor to find out.
Not sure it's any cheaper than replacing/rebuilding the carb, and you may have to anyway, but anything else is just guessing and you will be able to better dial in carb and timing in the future.
