Bleeding brakes?

I think I finally have the new brake system all assembled and adjusted. Drums turned. shoes matched, all new hydraulics both slave & master. Added a reservoir. New brake lines all but the one across the radiator. The old lines were working fine though, just copper & old. And I'm not seeing any leaks. (I fixed all I've found.)

Tried to bleed them using a vacuum pump at the wheels. This could suck through a lot of stuff but it looked like warm beer foam. The vacuum just frothed up the brake fluid.

Anyone tried using a vacuum for bleeding brakes? I thought this was a thing but I'm kinda' wondering now.

Anyway re-bled the brakes going around twice the old fashioned way. I'm getting a petal. I think its kinda' spongey and all the drums have locked up and don't seem to want to come unstuck.

But maybe this is normal? Every other time I've bled brakes the wheels were on the car and I never really noticed. Now that I've gone through all this, I'm watching everything like a hawk.

And it seems like no matter how much brake fluid I run though this (About a quart) it still seems like I'm getting air out of the system.

Anyway, any pointers, hints or tricks? I'm all eyes.

Thanks!
