If your gauge is like mine it show "C" on the left side and "H" on the right side. When I first got my truck I bought a very inexpensive mechanical temperature gauge from the local parts store and put that in. My temperature did fluctuate all the way up up to 200 degrees at times, but now I have the radiator fixed
(unclogged...) and rebuilt the engine (got rid of 60 years of rust/sediment) the gauge sits about 1/3 the way up, which in my case equates to the opening temperature of the thermostat. Once up to temperature, it never moves and is rock solid. As it should be.
