I have sought answers repeatedly from Forum members, the Forum archives, mechanics, starter rebuild shops and anybody who would listen as to why my starter (an early Prestolite 3 bolt w/ remote solenoid) wouldn't turn over after the truck ran down the road for a few minutes.I have a Ray Suiter conversion for my 360 with reverse Saginaw steering (for power steering).Ray says use starters with remote solenoids from 60's era Mopars to solve clearance issues. Good advice but try and find one! Admittedly, there is one source which will sell you a rebuilt 50 year old starter for $220 plus your old core plus shipping. So after about a year of lost time and money (thinking there couldn't be anything wrong with the starter I had rebuilt two times in a row and if there was an issue, nothing else would fit)I stumbled on IMI Performance Products in Whittier, CA. You want to purchase their brand new IMI 138-001 two bolt high torque gear reduction 9 tooth pinion gear starter for $249.50 plus shipping. Others have suggested that a mini starter might work but all of the ones I checked out had the same problem - they wouldn't clear! This one does and works great due to it's high torque. So even if your old cast iron relic starter works,go out tonight and remove it and throw it in the garbage or donate it to Goodwill. If you get this starter you won't be sorry.
