Yep. I carry a water bottle everywhere. I can set my back off just by not drinking water for an afternoon. The physical therapist had about ten reasons why she thought it was important to stay hydrated and some them sounded crackpot, but it does make a difference.
BTW- There was a recent paper about the role of micro muscle fibers and how they fit into the spasm response - Way I understand it, they pull tight instantly when you start to move, right before the major muscles are engaged. This lets the back know it doesn't need to spasm to prevent motion and prevent spine damage. If those tiny strands are loose from bad posture, or tensioned funny from a disc problem or major muscle tear, the major back muscles go to a locked default. Not sure if it's true or if I understood it correctly, but it made sense how you can get such a severe reaction from getting out of a truck or putting on a sock. My theory, based on nothing, is that those micro muscle fibers are really just little devils straight from hell so they are thirsty.
